Braving the Cold

I am leaving today for Utah/Idaho. I am off to freezing weather, people who use the phrase "Merry Christmas" and not "Happy Holidays", family togetherness and warm crackling fires. Morris and I will be spending Christmas in Idaho hopefully playing in the snow and New Years in Utah. I can't wait to get home to see family and friends. We hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

HappYness

On Saturday Morris and I went to see "The Pursuit of Happyness" with our good friends the Corbridge's--4th year Dental Students. I always enjoy seeing movies based on true events. I also was very anxious to see this movie because I saw the interview with Will Smith and Chris Gardner on Oprah and I was very impressed by this fathers love for his child. I also love that Will Smiths son--Jayden played the part of his son. I felt this made the movie see much more genuine. Great movie with great friends. Morris and I have met so many wonderful friends during Dental School and we are so grateful for our friendship with each of them. After the movie we stopped in Starbucks for hot chocolate and cider, this was Jared and Stephanie's first trip to Starbucks. I hope my bad habit has not rubbed off on them. At least we live in California and you really can only drink hot chocolate a few times a year.

Holidays at the Houlberg's

Saturday night the Houlberg's hosted a Christmas Party for the dental students. It was such fun night. We had yummy Christmas sweets and an intense gift exchange. It is so much fun spending time with the other dental students. I just love everything Christmas time, I can not get enough of it. Thank you Houlberg's for a great time!

Thank you Allentown

On Saturday morning I got up at 5:30 am to go for a 10K run I had signed up to run in September. When I signed up in September I had been going to the gym regularly and running. Somewhere between September and December my visits to the gym and running had become very sporadic. Nonetheless I had signed up for the race so I decided I would still run without one ounce of training. I was feeling pretty good the first 4 miles but mile 5 I was really needing a break. Just when I was getting ready to walk my ipod began playing "Allentown" a song by Billy Joel my family--The Allen’s, have used to name gathering places of our family. I decided I could not take a break during "Allentown" my family of marathon runners would be so disappointed in me I needed to take a break during a lousy 10K. Thanks to "Allentown" and a few large gentlemen I could not let finish in front of me, I finished the race. The photos are from the end of the race when I was back at my house because I had told Morris the wrong location for the end of the race.

A Night with the "Stars"

On our way home from the Pantages we took a stroll down Hollywood Blvd. and the walk of fame. Here are a couple pictures of our favorite Stars.

Lion King

What an amazing show! Morris and I went some friends Sean and Marissa on Friday to see Lion King at the Pantages Theatre. I absolutely loved the show. The costumes were so colorful and amazing. I was speaking to a New Yorker earlier in the week about the show and they were telling me how "it was such a Hollywood production." I highly recommend seeing the show if you have a chance, Hollywood or wherever.

Thank you Ellen

On Tuesday my friend Nicole and I went to a taping of the Ellen Show. It was so much fun. I was especially excited about attending a taping of this show because it was during her 12 days of giveaways. Morris and I kept making bets on what the giveaway was going to be. I had dreams of it being a really cool camera or digital camcorder but to no avail. I had joked about being on the show that ended up with the lotions and bathrobe and that is exactly what it was in additon to a shower head and some bath towels. The show was still so much fun. Thank you Nicole for inviting me and Thank you Ellen for great gifts. The show will air today--Tuesday the 5th if you want to check it out.

Dinner and Movie

On Saturday I had a hot date with two of the cutest boys around. Tanner, Logan and I went to see Happy Feet on Saturday followed up with Happy Meals from McDonalds. We invited Elle and her parents along as well. It was so fun to spend the day with Tanner and Logan. I am so happy to know that there were people taking my neice and newphew to the movies when there little brother was in the hospital. After the movie we stopped to take some pictures in the barn set up for the new movie Charlottes Web that is coming out soon.

At Least we have Gay Cake

Last night was the UCLA intramural championship game. Morris's team--Gold Grill, all dental students were defeated in the final game by a touchdown. The final game was the Med School VS. The Dental School. I am pretty sure the medical school had paid off the refs before the game-there were a number of bad calls against the Gold Grill. Broc-one of Morris's classmates came to rescue at the end of the game with some Gay Cake to cheer up the boys. Broc has a patient who brings him cake every time he sees him for an appointment. The cake has been named the Gay Cake because of some suspicions. Nothing like Gay Cake to boost your spirits.

Our Home for the Holidays

Here are a few photos of our home for Christmas. I have been itching to put out the decorations since October. Morris kept telling me not until after Thanksgiving. The minute we returned from my sisters on Friday I began putting out the decorations. We are very limited on storage space in our little place so we have little to put our but I thought I would share a few photos to spread some cheer.

Black Friday

There is one positive to not spending Thanksgiving in Boise-you get to sleep in the day after Thanksgiving. Every year my mother assembles a large team of shoppers to help her score the great deals on Black Friday. With so many grandchildren to shop for she has to stretch those dollars around the holidays. After the turkey is all put away the adds come out and we start our battle plan for the next day. It usually goes something along the lines of one shopper walking in the door and standing in line while the others run crazy through the store gathering all of the items and then joining the shopper in line. The day will usually begin at Best Buy or Target depending on who has the hottest item. The day is not complete until the trip to Fred Meyer to purchase socks at 50% off. Only once have I seen blood drawn on our early morning outings. This year my sister Brooke and I did not go out and fight the early morning crowds, we opted for sleep over the great savings. We did however, head to Target in the late afternoon just to say we have not forgotten everything we have been taught. I snapped this photo at Target while my sister was modeling a cute hat for her son.

Turkey Bowl

My brother in law Bill has been so pumped for Turkey Bowl this year. This is all he talked about every time he saw Morris. Even after all of the hype they were defeated. Bill did reassure us however he would be taking over the quarterback position next year as it has been lacking the last two years. The photo is evidence that the boys still had a great time playing in the mud.

On the Big Screen

Wednesday night Morris and I went to see Nicole perform at the Clippers game. Nicole is a good friend from Boise who is living here in LA and has always wanted to dance for a NBA team, this year she made the Clippers Spirit Dance Team. The Clippers were not able to pull of a victory over the Sonics that night. I wasn't affected by the loss because I was only there to watch Nicole anyway. Those sitting around us found it a bit odd I was only snapping pictures when the dancers came out but at least I was able to snap one of Nicole on the big screen.

Beautiful Day

Friday was the day of Zachary's funeral in Austin. The funeral was a beautiful service. It is such a comfort to have the gospel in our lives and to know that we will have the opportunity to be reunited with Zachary once again. Greg and Tieryn (Zach's parents) both delivered beautiful messages about eternal families and Zach's mission on earth and in heaven. I am so happy I was able to attend the funeral and support my brother and family at this time. It was amazing to see the number of lives this little spirit touched. Zachary was an amazing boy, I know his presence will continue to be felt forever. These pictures were from the graveside service. We all wrote messages to Zachary on balloons and sent them to heaven where Zachary is looking down on us now. The other picture is from the last Allen family "squish" with all of Zachary's family gathered around his coffin for one last hug at the end of the graveside service.

In Loving Memory of Zachary

Zachary Thomas Allen passed away on Monday November 13th. My nephew Zachary www.zacharyprogress.blogspot.com left earth peacefully in the arms of his mother and father. Zachary was born in January and in his short 10 months on earth he has touched the lives of many. Zacharys sweet spirit has been such a joy to experience. My family will be forever blessed by being a part of Zacharys life. I will be traveling to Texas on Wednesday to attend the funeral services on Friday. I look forward to the day our family will once again be reunited with Zachary and be able to once again spend time with this special boy. I love you Zachary.

DeJaVu

Yes another trip down to Disneyland for the Poole Clan. This time new visitors--The Poole Train. All of Morris's family was in town for a Disneyland vacation. Not exactly a vacation for these So. Cal Pooles but we still had a great time. We love spending time with our family, Mickey and Friends are just an added bonus. As annual passholders Morris and I will often go to Disneyland for the evening hop on one ride with a short line, catch the fireworks, grab a churro(with caramel dipping sauce of course) and head home. This weekend however we had 2 full days of the Happiest Place on Earth. Disneyland has just put up all of the Holiday decorations so I enjoyed the magic of the Holiday season. We spent time walking through shops and seeing things we often pass right by. It was so great to get to spend time with family.

Congratulations LA!

You are the proud owners of a very brand new H & M. H & M opened it's doors to Los Angeles on Nov. 9th at the Beverly Center(6.68 miles from me). This is a special day for me--I love H & M. For those of you have never been--GO, it is a fantastic treat. Happy Shopping!

Thank you Nevada Day

Morris and I had the best treat last weekend. My brother Ben and his wife Heidi came to visit us in Los Angeles. All of Nevada had Friday off from work and school for Nevada Day so I convinced these two Nevadians to head south. The weather was perfect for our weekend of LA greats. Friday we spent the day at Disneyland along with about a million other people in the blazing sun. Other weekend highlights included Tito's Tacos, Santa Monica Pier and 3rd Street promenade, Diddy Riese and a beautiful drive up the PCH. We had so much fun with Ben and Heidi. We hope we will be able to have many more weekends together while they are living in Reno.

Deciphering Genetic What?

I thought I would post this picture of Morris from his trip to Las Vegas. This poster represents much of our first year of marriage as well as all the hard work Morris has put into his research. I asked Morris if he would like to post about all of the interesting things he has learned in doing his research but he thought you would all enjoy it about as much as I do. I am so proud of my husband and all of his efforts in school. So here is to you Morris and all of the little rats that you used to create this wonderful research.

Need a Sitter?

I had to post this adorable picture of Morris. Morris was so nice to watch Wyatt while his mom went to Dream Dinners with the girls. Life cam get pretty hectic with school and a new baby. Morris was holding Wyatt trying to get him to sleep when we got home and it was so sweet I had to take a picture.

Pumpkin Time

Our friends the Hendrys invited us over for FHE/ pumpkin carving on Monday. The Hendry's are a fun couple in our ward that we love to spend time with. We have started combining FHE with Monday night Football--I know not a great combination but it works. They have a nice new TV with HD that Morris likes to take advantage of when it is offered. This week we decided to carve pumpkins while watching football and enjoying a spiritual message. Morris and I made a great team, he enjoys gutting the pumpkin and I prefer to carve. We ended up with two very cute pumpkins for our Trunk or Treat this weekend. Go Team Poole!

Dream Dinner delicious

Friday night the "Dental Wives Club" went to Dream Dinners. We were all interested in finding out about how we could all simplify our lives by not having to make dinner every night. We had such a great time preparing our meals and dirtying the kitchen and not worrying about the cleanup. We booked a private session so we had the place to ourselves, singing and dancing was totally allowed in this kitchen. What a great idea for working ladies and busy moms.

It is Finally Here

Today is the day. Project Runway Season Finale is finally here! I did do a little peeking on the internet and get a few clues about what is going to happen--I just couldn't resist. But I will not spoil the fun for those of you out there who are as obsessed as I am. Go Michael!

Table for One

Morris left for Vegas yesterday-boo. Morris went to Vegas for the American Dental Association (ADA) Convention or something like that. Morris has been working on a research project and has been asked by UCLA to go represent the school at this convention. Morris's research project won first place at UCLA, let's hope he has the same luck in the sin city. Each time Morris is away I always think I am going to be really productive and I plan a number of things to jam into my schedule so I don't spend so much time missing him. Needless to say I am more productive when he is not around but I don't think I miss him any less. Hurry home Mo, I miss you!

Star Sighting

It happened today at about 12:00pm. I walked into the pharmacy in Beverly Hills and standing in line just before me was----Chris Rock. Really truly it was him. Given the fact that we live in Los Angeles and I frequent the Beverly Hills area daily for work you would think this would not be my fist encounter with a celeb. I didn't do anything embarrassing I just grabbed my prescriptions took a second look to make sure my eyes were not fooling me and sure enough it was still Chris Rock. I walked out the door and my first thought was- bummer I don't have a picture to put on the blog. Oh well. Hopefully Mr. Rock will be feeling better soon. Star Sightings to date: Bruce Willis, Reba McIntyre, Vanna White, Larry King, Hillary Duff, Dr. Rey (Dr. 90210--not sure E network counts) Buzz Aldrin and Sylvester Stalone.

Do U Sudoku?

Being someone who does not enjoy Math, I never thought I could like numbers so much. I was so irritated every time I saw someone working on one of these stupid number puzzles. I could not figure out what was so exciting about it. It seemed like every airplane or doctors office I was in someone was writing numbers in these little boxes. I just did not get it. It took the convincing words my sister in law Tieryn to finally get me hooked on this number mystery. Now I am that annoying person at the pool and in line at the grocery store working on solving yet another number puzzle. Who knew numbers could be fun? Morris too has caught the Sudoku bug and solves all of my puzzles once they are too difficult for me. He is much smarter than me and actually enjoys math. He already called Math homework duties when we have children as long as I take English. Sounds good to me.

And it is all Mine

Thanks to a discount compliments of my brother and a very generous bonus from my employer I am the proud owner of a brand new laptop. My very first computer that is all mine. I had been begging Morris to let me buy a computer but we couldn't justify it on our budget. For the first time I do not have to beg my husband for a few minutes during one of his study breaks or log hours in a boring computer lab to surf the web. I can now view my emails and shop for hours from the comforts of my sofa. After a few hours on the phone with Dell Customer Service trying to work out the shipping kinks she arrived here safely and she is a beauty.

Best Sister Award

And the award goes to...Brooke! Last week I was talking to my sister and telling her how badly I missed watching General conference at home and partaking of my Dad's wonderful scones. Every conference weekend my Dad would make a huge batch of scones and we would eat them while listening the morning session. I have been missing the days of watching conference at home and eating delicious scones. So Brooke and I decided we would spend the weekend together going to soccer games, watching conference, and what else eating scones! Brooke got up early on Sunday morning to indulge me in my desire to eat wonderful scones, it was such a wonderful day. Scones, a wonderful conference session on a home television, and jigsaw puzzles. I love having my sister and her family near. It makes home feel not so far away.

GOAL!

Saturday I went out to Corona,CA to watch my niece and nephew play in their soccer games. I have never really enjoyed the sport of soccer a whole lot but it is a lot more interesting when the players are under 7 and family. My nephew Christopher (who would now like to be called Chris after turning 5 two months ago) was the first game of the morning. This is Chris's second season of soccer and he still is more interested in picking the daisies in the field than scoring the next goal. Although he has yet to score a goal he is getting much better at his cartwheels and provides entertainment for all the parents on the sidelines. However my niece Bethany-7 is a the super star on the team. She is excellent in all positions and scores and average of 10 goals a game. It was so fun to see Bethany play and Chris do what he does on the soccer field. I still don't love the game of soccer but it is pretty great to be the Aunt on the sidelines.

Ant Invasion

One of the joys of living in a warm climate is you get to share your home with all kinds of four and sometimes more legged creatures. Wednesday morning we woke up to one of the biggest gatherings we have had. The most frustrating part is that we just had our apartment sprayed last week while we were on vacation. We found the ants consuming my favorite cookies in the cupboard--the pink frosting sugar cookies from the bakery. I can't blame the little guys I can't stay away from them either-they are my favorite. I think I am most upset that they got to eat more of them than me and I am sure they will not be bringing me anymore anytime soon. Dirty little ants.

Cheers to 3rd Years!

Sunday evening we decided to invite Morris's classmates over for a toast(Martinelle's of course). Morris had to go back to school on Monday-boo, so we felt like we should all get together to start this year off right. We toasted to a much better than the second year of dental school. I love to host so I look for any excuse to have people over. We have made such great friends here--I love it when we can all get together and talk about things other than school. Highlight of the evening was when I shot whip cream all over myself and the kitchen. Good times.

Sweet Sweet Mexico

Morris and I recently returned from a much needed vacation to Mexico. We spent six days in Puerto Vallarta. Morris and I decided we needed a vacation after the year we had just been through. Morris finished his boards in July and we decided we needed a vacation to celebrate. We stayed at a resort on the North side of Puerto Vallarta called Grand Velas. It was so nice. We were so sad when we had to go home--six days was not long enough. We spent most of our time poolside enjoying the rays and pina colada's. Morris actually consumed 34 of them in 6 days.
He took full advantage of all-inclusive. We had wonderful meals and excellent service. They must have thought we actually could afford to be there. We did leave the resort one day for a canopy tour. We went up to the Sierra Madres and rode mules to the top of the mountains then we took the zip lines through the jungle down to the bottom. We drove home through downtown and this was the only glimpse I had of real Mexico--and I am completely fine with only having seen that much. We had an excellent time.

Park City in a Flash

Morris and I headed up to Park City, UT for a few days. Well Morris stayed for a while to spend some time with his family but I was only there for two days. Morris's dad had a confrence in Park City so we decided we should all stay the weekend there to keep him company. I wanted to stay in Park City because I was really looking forward to hitting up the outlet mall. It had been along time since I was able to vist the Banana Outlet. I was a little disappointed in the selection of clothing but no worries the trip was still a success. We spent one afternoon at Park City resort and rode the alpine slide and the new coaster. We had such a good time. It is always so nice to come home and spend time with family.

Love is in the Air

Congratulations to Jennie and Spencer! Jennie is a very close friend from college, we both studied Interior Design. She and Spencer have known each other since grade school and I think they are a fantastic couple. They were married in Las Vegas the second week of September. The wedding was so beautiful and such a great time. The best part was getting to spend time with my girlfriends. We think back about all of the good times we shared as roommates and the next fun trip we are going to take together.

A Little Late on Labor Day

It is hard to believe September is almost over. Morris and I have had a very busy September. My next few posts make up our September of Craziness. Labor Day weekend Morris's best friend Sam came to stay with us. After our weekend full of football I decided we needed to spend Labor Day at the beach. Morris and Sam went to the sporting goods store in the morning and purchased some beach gear among other things. We spent much of the day basking in the sun and enjoying a day of no labors. Yeah to Labor Day!
